Cholesterol Facts

Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is an important part of the outer lining of the cell or membrane, found in animals as well as humans. Cholesterol in a person's circulation comes from two main places: food consumption and liver production. Cholesterol mainly comes from meats or poultry, such as fish, or dairy.

There are two types of cholesterol most are familiar with; these being LDL and HDL. LDL cholesterol is referred to as 'the bad cholesterol.' Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol can run an increased risk of coronary heart disease. HDL cholesterol is a good cholesterol because HDL can prevent atherosclerosis by removing cholesterol from the artery walls and circulating them through the liver.
