The Healthy Melon
Melon not only tastes great but has healing properties as well. The ancient Israelites were said to have developed a fondness for the melon and cucumber during their time of bondage in Egypt. And it was well deserved. The musk melon, or cantaloupe, was widely cultivated in Egypt. It was known as one of the best cucumber melon-fruits.
Cucumbers and melons, often grouped into the same family, were considered very valuable in the diet of biblical people. To protect their investment, lookouts were often posted in the fields were cucumbers and melons would grow.
Cantaloupe (or musk melon) is full with beta carotene, fiber, potassium, folate, and vitamins B6 and C. The beta carotene is an anti cancer agent which may protect against oral cancers, as well as cervix, stomach and uterus cancer. The ingredients in melon act as anticoagulants, thinning the blood and helping to prevent cardiovascular disease as well.
In China, a member of the cantaloupe family was used to treat hepatitis. In india, cantaloupe was used as a diuretic. In the Phillipines, healers recommended the melon in cancer treatment. And in Central America seeds of melons were eaten to get rid of worms.
Research studies are now ongoing to find the ingredients in the melon that could be used to fight against cancer.
