The fig is mentioned more then 50 times in the bible. It is the first fruit named specifically
in Genesis 3:7. The fig is one of seven species that the holy land was blessed with. The fig
is known to be a symbol of psace, prosperity and great joy.
The fig contains a strong anti-cancer fighting power. There is a story within the Bible that speaks of
Hezekiah, the King of Juda (727-699 BC). Hezekiah was '...sick even to death...' until visited
by the prophet Isiah. Isiah '...Ordered that they should take a lump of figs, and lay it as
a plaster upon the wound...' Believe it or not Hezekiah recovered after this, ruling for
another 15 years.
Figs, fresh or dried, have been known since ancient times for their sweetness, nutritional and medical
value. Greek and Roman athletes ate figs to increase their stamina and improve their performance. Figs
are high in fiber, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C to name a few. Fresh figs may
range in color from golden yellow to a deep purple black. Avoid figs with soft spots
or brown blotches which means they are old. Figs are best kept in the fridge (either dried
or fresh).
